Community action saves crops and lessens dependency on Tanguar Haor resources

Damage of crops due to early flooding is a concern each year for the Tanguar Haor community, who risk losing all their crops (paddy) sometimes just 7-10 days before harvesting.  Almost  12.5 % of Tanguar Haor’s land that dries up in winter is used for rice cultivation; the cultivated land is characterized by high yielding capacity for its fertility. It is estimated that total rice harvested per season is worth a minimum 30 million Taka. Unfortunately though for the past three years, Tanguar Haor farmers have been unable to harvest their crop as their crops have been completely damaged by earlier floods.  This however all changed this year when the community people, empowered to save their land, took action into their own hands. …

A Green Parade for a Green Paradise

 A green parade of bike riders kicked off the ‘Keep Koh Tao Clean, Keep Koh Tao Green’ campaign on the morning of 28 April at Mae Haad pier on the west coast of the island. The event, aimed at raising islanders’ awareness of the growing waste problem, was part of the 2012 annual Koh Tao festival, organised by the Save Koh Tao community group, the Koh Tao Tambon Administrative Organization, and local businesses.

Asian vultures fly back from brink of extinction

Once described as possibly the most abundant large bird of prey in the world, the Critically Endangered White-rumped Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) has suffered a population decline of more than 99.9% in just 15 years. According to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, 10 of the world’s 23 vulture species are threatened with extinction, with the most rapid declines occurring in Asia. As scavengers, vultures have an important ecological role and these population declines have serious consequences for humans and the environment. …
