The IUCN Future of Sustainability Initiative was an international consultation process to support the development of a new sustainability vision and strategy relevant to the global challenges of the 21st century.
Such challenges include climate change, peak oil, biodiversity loss, poverty and unsustainable production and consumption. It was both conceptual and solutions-oriented in scope and was undertaken in partnership with some of the leading thinkers and institutions from around the world at global and regional level.
The initiative involved different constituencies in its review process such as government representatives, economists, the social justice community, business leaders, young people, innovators as well as leaders from the conservation and environmental community. It used traditional discussion forums as well as Web2 and mobile phone technologies to generate and share new concepts.
The ideas generated by the initiative helped guide the long term direction of IUCN in its medium term strategy: A 2020 Vision for IUCN; and the new IUCN Intersessional Programme 2009-2012 entitled "Shaping a Sustainable Future".
