The Global Protected Areas Programme supports IUCN’s new business model to build on the scientific knowledge that enables IUCN to deliver essential standards and knowledge products, to develop and test concepts in field situations for results on the ground, and to mobilize the Union to build capacity and influence and leverage impact globally, nationally and locally. Priorities for the Global Protected Areas Programme in the period leading up to the next World Parks Congress in 2014 and in delivering on IUCN’s next Quadrennial Programme are set out below. You are invited to read and comment on these, but more importantly to indicate where you or your organization can partner with IUCN to deliver on this potential.
FIVE linked major programmatic priorities are needed to pursue IUCN’s mission and to align with IUCN’s new business plan and emerging 2013 – 2016 Programme:
- Enhance the capacity to effectively manage protected areas systems to conserve biodiversity
- Mainstream protected areas as natural solutions to global challenges, including biodiversity loss and climate change
- Foster equitable governance of protected area systems
- Facilitate the economic role and sustainable financing of protected areas systems
- Communicate and advocate the value of protected area systems
The Global Protected Areas Programme will be working with its development and implementation partners to deliver a set of knowledge products that requires global and regional leadership, and national and local proof of concept. The emphasis will be on finding successful examples of practice and scaling these up and disseminating them in new and powerful ways. Knowledge products and initiatives encompassed by the programme are set out below, and detailed in the accompanying discussion document.

You are invited to indicate how you or your organization can help IUCN’s Global Protected Area Programme to undertake these initiatives, announce them at the World Conservation Congress in Jeju, Korea in 2012, implement them through the IUCN Quadrennial Programme 2013-2016, and celebrate successes and envisage future scenarios at the once in ten year IUCN World Parks Congress in 2014.
