The Global Protected Area Programme of IUCN
Asia
aims to strengthen capacity for protected area establishment and management across the Asia region.
The approach is to generate, integrate, and disseminate knowledge on the most appropriate responses to emerging protected area issues in Asia, build capacity among individuals and institutions to plan and manage protected areas most effectively in collaboration with all major stakeholders, and to improve laws, policies and institutions for the conservation and sustainable and equitable use of protected area resources.
West Asia Middle East
One of the key concerns within the IUCN ROWA region is the lack of a representative network of Protected Areas that are effectively managed. Protected areas help to conserve key elements of biodiversity, play a significant role in social and economic development, and embody many practical approaches to participatory and collaborative management.

Le programme thématique « Aires Protégées et Biodiversité » du PACO se donne comme objectifs de renforcer la pertinence et de promouvoir la connaissance et l’utilisation efficace de l’outil Aires Protégées en Afrique Centrale et de l’Ouest.
Le programme thématique permet de faire de l’UICN une source d’information fiable en même temps qu’un fournisseur d’expertise et de capacité sur la conservation de la biodiversité en général et les Aires Protégées en particulier. Dans ce sens, l’action du programme permet la promotion des mécanismes de gouvernance, la promotion des synergies ainsi que le partage d’expériences entre les initiatives.

Las áreas protegidas son el eje central en prácticamente todas las estrategias nacionales e internacionales de conservación. Sin duda, constituyen el núcleo fundamental de los esfuerzos para proteger las especies amenazadas del mundo y, cada vez más, se reconoce su papel esencial no sólo como proveedoras esenciales de servicios de ecosistema y recursos biológicos, sino como elementos fundamentales en las estrategias de mitigación al cambio climático. Además, en ocasiones se han probado fundamentales para proteger ciertas comunidades humanas amenazadas y lugares de gran valor cultural y espiritual. Dado que las áreas protegidas cubren el doce por ciento de la superficie emergida del planeta, el sistema de áreas protegidas representa un compromiso sin precedentes hacia el futuro, un faro de esperanza, en lo que a veces parece ser una carrera desalentadora hacia el declive ambiental y social1. Las áreas protegidas encaran muchos desafíos, como amenazas externas asociadas al cambio climático, al turismo irresponsable, al desarrollo de infraestructura y a las demandas crecientes de uso y explotación de recursos naturales. Otras amenazas que enfrentan las áreas protegidas son la falta de apoyo político y de recursos.
El Programa de Áreas Protegidas de la UICN-Sur trabaja para consolidar e integrar la gestión de las áreas protegidas en América del Sur, mejorar el conocimiento e incrementar la interacción entre los tomadores de decisiones de la región.
Europe
IUCN’s Pan-European Region covers the whole of Europe and North and Central Asia. This is IUCN’s largest programmatic region and contains two global biodiversity hotspots: The Mediterranean basin and the Caucasus.
The Programme Office for South-Eastern Europe
Established in June 2004 in the premises of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia, an IUCN member organisation. It serves the IUCN constituency in the region between EU in the West, CIS in the North-East and Mediterranean Sea in the South.
The goal of the office is
“To influence, encourage and assist Mediterranean societies in achieving both the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, and sustainable development.”

IUCN Oceania has developed four key programme areas. These complement IUCN's Global Programme 2009 - 2012.Building resilience and adapting to climate change;improving livelihoods; and addressing economic and development policies are key principles applied in all of these areas.
