Workshops
The
Murcia Conference was organized by the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean
Cooperation along with the Regional Government of Murcia and the Caja
de Ahorros del Mediterraneo (public bank). This event symbolises a
common will to strengthen the cooperation across the Mediterranean
basin and present a step forward towards a common view of the Mediterranean
insight on protected areas management. Over 120 representatives of
22 countries participated in different workshops and addressed that
five main previously identified priority themes: environmental
connectivity, governance, gaps
in the system, training and sustainable finance.
More than 20 case studies on protected areas, management experiences
and technical documents were showcased and contributed to identifying
the tendencies and future orientations in the region. Thereafter,
the main conclusions of each workshop were brought to the IUCN V World
Parks Congress (Durban, South Africa, September 2003), the largest
global conservation forum for protected areas celebrated every 10
years.
