The dimensions of the energy sector are many and vast. With IUCN’s global work on ecosystems and livelihoods, the focus of our work on energy is on managing the environmental and social impacts of energy options (beyond greenhouse gas emissions), and promoting natural systems as potentially sustainable sources of energy.
To this end, IUCN is currently concentrating efforts on the below issues:
- Biodiversity and social safeguards for large-scale biofuel investments
- Rural access to energy based on natural systems
- Incorporating environmental flows in hydropower decision-making
- Managing impacts of large scale renewable energy infrastructure
Historically, IUCN has also worked on oil and gas issues and continues to promote best practice guidance.
