IUCN solutions

Reducing poverty in a time of rapid global change and uncertainty cannot be achieved with the current ‘business-as-usual’ approach. Today’s challenges are complex and show that social, economic and natural systems are inextricably linked. Finding solutions requires integrated and innovative thinking, and dialogue between multiple interest groups. Each situation is unique, calling for local solutions which draw on the experience of a global network.

IUCN has a key role to play in linking conservation, livelihoods and human well-being. It is focusing on the following key priorities:

• Enhancing understanding of the links between food security and ecosystems
• Improving rights to and governance of natural resources
• Increasing access to markets for the rural poor; and
• Reducing vulnerability to natural hazards.

Involving its Members, Commissions and partner organizations, IUCN implements and coordinates on-the-ground learning around the world to identify the most effective solutions for development and human security through the sustainable management of ecosystems.

IUCN mobilizes the best available science and harnesses traditional and local knowledge to help governments, communities, farmers and fishers to manage their resources in the most sustainable and equitable way.

IUCN promotes the participation of multiple stakeholders, including marginalized groups of civil society, in decision making which affects their natural resources and livelihoods.

IUCN is involved in numerous activities and projects around the world which support governments and communities in managing their resources in sustainable and equitable ways. Selected examples of these activities are highlighted in these pages. More information can be found by visiting the IUCN Programme or Region that is of interest to you.

IUCN’s livelihoods network

Across the Union a diverse range of activities are underway related to human well-being, livelihoods and poverty reduction. IUCN’s Livelihoods Network coordinates and facilitates this work, exchanging knowledge and lessons learned. It connects people across the IUCN Secretariat, Commissions, Member and partner organizations.
